Year 5 Art - Making Stronger Marks
This week in Art, Year 5 focused on developing stronger mark-making techniques. Students conducted an in-depth investigation into various pencil types, specifically using 6B pencils to draw and create typography directly over newspaper articles. The primary challenge was ensuring their drawings and writing were bold enough to dominate the underlying text. Following this successful experimentation, they transferred these newly honed skills to plain paper.
Year 5 RE - How do Bible texts teach Christian Values
This week in RE, Year 5 engaged in a thoughtful exploration of biblical texts, working in groups to analyze passages from Corinthians, Thessalonians, Matthew, Colossians, and Philippians. These texts all offered guidance on how to live a Christian life. Our fantastic group discussions allowed students to pull out key themes such as love, prayer, trust in God, and caring for others. They then synthesised these ideas into a summary paragraph before having a profound conversation about the challenges and rewards of applying this advice in their own lives.
Year 5 History - Identifying Viking Objects and how they relate to the Vikings
This week in Year 5 history, we explored a variety of Viking artifacts to deduce their significance. Students were given a collection of objects, including a sword, a compass, a longboat, wool, and grapes, and asked to make connections to Viking life. This activity sparked a great deal of lively discussion, with the grapes proving to be a particularly intriguing puzzle! Our investigation then led us to learn about the incredible saga of Leif Eriksson, and how he discovered Vinland—a land so named for the wild grapes he found and brought back to Greenland.

Year 5's History studies this term are currently immersed in the fascinating world of the Vikings. We kicked off the unit with an exciting game of Top Trumps, exploring the unique attributes of monsters such as the Gorgon, Siren, and Cyclops, which will serve as excellent inspiration for their final writing task.
Year 5 Maths - Place Value with Gattegno Charts
Year 5 students have been exploring the fascinating world of place value! Using Gattegno charts, they've been busy mastering how numbers change when we add or subtract 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, or even 100,000. These charts have been a fantastic visual tool, really helping the children grasp the true value of each digit.
Year 5 Science - Separating Mixtures by Sieving
This term, Year 5 scientists have been exploring the fascinating world of mixtures! This week, we became gold prospectors, using different-sized sieves and colanders to separate a mixture of soil and gold glitter flakes. We discovered that the smaller the holes, the more finely the mixture is separated. It was a hands-on lesson that really helped us understand the principles of separation.

Year 5 - Beach Pebbles to Remember Mrs Davis
During our recent beach trip to St. Anne's, each Year 5 student collected a unique pebble as a heartfelt memento for Mrs. Davis, who we sadly lost this year. As she would have joined us on this outing, we felt it fitting to bring a piece of the beach to her remembrance tree. The children then painted thoughtful and personal designs on their pebbles, before gently and respectfully placing them around the tree, creating a beautiful and lasting tribute.
Year 5 Geography - Trip to St Anne's Beach
This half term, Year 5 has delved deeply into the vital topic of oceans in Geography, with a particular focus on understanding the pervasive effects of plastic pollution on our seas and beaches. We critically examined personal actions to combat this issue, exploring strategies such as diligent recycling, creative plastic repurposing, and mindful consumption to reduce single-use plastics. Our learning culminated in a valuable field trip to St. Anne's beach, where students actively identified the types of litter present, complementing our classroom discussions with real-world observation. Of course, we also found time to enjoy some well-deserved ice creams and fun in the sand!
Year 5 Art - 3D Art: Theatre Set Designs

They then thoughtfully selected a story to bring to life on their stages, with imaginative choices ranging from The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe to The Little Mermaid and even a Minecraft Movie adaptation! These creative visions were then expertly translated into impressive 3D models.
