Year 1 - Science - Testing For Toughness
Year 1 carried out an investigation into toughness, aiming to identify which materials were strong and which were weak. As part of a fair test, they struck each material with a hammer and observed the results. They discovered that some materials, like plastic bottles, changed shape, while others, such as metal bowls, remained unchanged.
Reception - Colour Mixing
Today, the children continued their exploration of colour mixing, incorporating a bit of science into their learning. They used spray bottles filled with water to spray onto tissue paper, observing how the water caused the colours to run and blend. As the colours transferred onto the plain paper underneath, the children were fascinated by the patterns and mixes that appeared. Throughout the activity, the children engaged in discussions about the different colours they could see and how they changed when mixed together. They expressed excitement and curiosity as they observed the effects of the water on the tissue paper. Many children took pride in their artwork, eagerly sharing their creations with others. This hands-on experience encouraged creativity, scientific thinking, and exploration of colour mixing in an engaging and interactive way.
Year 3 Science - Recognising The Effects And Uses Of Forces
In Science in Year 3 they have been looking at the different effects and uses of forces. They completed an investigation about friction, by flicking two plastic bottle tops, one covered with sandpaper and the other plain to see which one would travel the furthest. They found out that the rougher the surface the more friction there was.
Year 1 - Science - Testing Materials For Absorbency
Year 1 carried out a test to find out which materials were absorbent. They tested fabric, paper, tin foil and plastic. They found that both paper and fabric were absorbent.
Year 3 Life Education Visit - Meet The Brain
Today we had a visit from Life Education. They came into Year 3 to talk about your brain. With the help of a magic t shirt and the interactive whiteboard the children were about to see how their brain worked with other parts of the body. The ysaw inside the lungs, what blood looked like in the body, what the brain looked like and how the heart worked. At the end they met Harold the giraffe and sang a song about friendship.
Year 6: Science - Classifying Bacteria
In science this week, year 6 have been learning about bacteria, and how different types of bacteria can be classified.
Year 3 Science - Comparing the Drainage Rates of Different Soils.
In Science Year 3 have been comparing different soils and how well they drain. They used clay, sand, peat and chalk soils. They placed some of each soil on piece of filter paper in a sieve then poured 100ml of water through it. They learnt that sandy soil drained the best.
Year 6: Science - Classifying Plants
This week in Science, Year 6 have worked collaboratively to research the different branches of the plant kingdom, before creating their own classification keys. L.O: To classify plants.
Year 5 Science - Investigating Friction
In Science, Year 5 are looking at different forces each week. This week we have investigated friction, and whether weight affects the amount of friction. We used the slippy hall floor to slide trays - increasing the amount of weight each time and then measuring how far the tray slid. We discovered that weight does affect friction, as the heavier trays did not slide as far.
Reception Class - Making Chocolate Mug Cakes!
The children were so excited this afternoon as we finally made our chocolate mug cakes. The children have been learning about ingredients and recipes this week, and our story has been Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen. The children had to follow the recipe, carefully counting the number of spoonfuls of each ingredient. We then talked about what would happen when we cooked the mug cakes in the microwave. Some of the mug cakes rose so high, they spilled over the sides like a chocolate volcano!
Year 3 Science - Looking For Fossils
In Science Year 3 have been looking at fossils. They watched a video about fossil hunter Mary Anning and learnt that people who look for fossils are called palaeontologists. By examining fossils we can learn about the Earth's history, creatures from different eras, what the environment was like and how living things and the climate changed over time.
Year 5 Science: Water Resistance
In Science, Year 5 have been learning about water resistance, connecting this force to air resistance. We created shapes from plasticine and tried to make some more aerodynamic than others. We then timed how long it took for these shapes to drop into the water, understanding that the least surface area, more streamlined shapes dropped faster as there was less water resistance.
