Reception Maths - One More Within 5
Our Reception class has been getting stuck into some brilliant early number work this week. We’ve been exploring one more within 5, following the White Rose Maths approach. The children worked together in a circle, taking turns to spot numbers on the carpet and find what comes next. Lots of talking, checking, and little moments of “I know it!” along the way. It’s been lovely to see their confidence grow as they begin to recognise small numbers instantly and understand how numbers build. Simple, hands-on activities like this make the idea of “one more” really click for them.
Reception - Physical Development- Scissor Control
In Reception we know that mastering scissor control is so much more than just cutting paper. It’s about building hand strength, developing hand-eye coordination, refining bilateral integration (using both hands together), and boosting concentration. These skills are vital for everything from writing their name and fastening buttons to eventually using a keyboard. The children have been putting their skills to the test and using them to cut out objects to make links to our phonics.
Reception - Class Worship - Moses
This week in our Reception class worship, we learned about Moses and how he showed compassion and trust in God. We listened to the story of how Moses helped the Israelites and trusted God to guide him, even when things were difficult. The children talked about what it means to care for others and to have faith, just like Moses did. We thought about times when we can show compassion — by helping a friend, sharing, or being kind. To finish, we said a short prayer together, thanking God for people who care for us and asking for courage to trust Him, just like Moses.
Reception - RE - Special Times
In RE this week, Reception have been learning about special places. We looked at Ecclesiastes 3:1–8 (The Scroll) and talked about what makes certain places special to us. The children then created their own beautiful scrolls — a lovely reminder that every moment has its own meaning and time.
Reception - Maths - Shape Detectives!
This week in Reception we’ve been learning all about shapes! We went on a circle hunt around school and spotted circles everywhere — wheels, pizzas, clocks, and more. We talked about how a circle is a continuous curve with no corners, and the children loved finding examples in their environment. We definitely had some brilliant shape detectives on the case!
Reception- Music- Festival of Diwali
Our Reception children have been exploring a vibrant and exciting cultural festival called Diwali, and it's been an absolute blast! Diwali is often called the Festival of Lights, celebrated by millions of people around the world. It’s a time of great joy, sparkling lights, delicious food, and wonderful music. We wanted our little learners to experience this joy, not just by seeing pictures, but by feeling the music and moving their bodies! We started by listening to some beautiful and lively Indian music. It was so different from some of the songs we usually sing – with new instruments and exciting rhythms! The children described it as "bouncy," "happy," and even "making me want to jump!" This is such an important part of learning about other cultures – understanding that music sounds different all over the world, and each style has its own special feeling. To help us connect with the music and express ourselves, we brought out a magical basket of scarves and ribbons! These weren't just any scarves; they were bright, colourful, and so silky to touch. The children absolutely loved using them to dance. We talked about how the lights of Diwali flicker and dance, and how fireworks sparkle and explode in the sky. Then, we tried to make our scarves and ribbons do the same thing!
Online Safety - Fortnite
Fortnite continues to reign supreme in the gaming world, drawing in millions of players with its bold graphics, fast-paced action and constant stream of new content. This guide looks at the latest developments in the game – such as themed updates, crossover characters and limited-edition cosmetics – and what they mean for young players and the adults who support them. It also unpacks some of the key online safety risks associated with Fortnite. With in-game purchases, cross-platform communication and regular seasonal updates creating an ‘always on’ experience, it’s vital that trusted adults understand how to help children and young people enjoy the game without being exposed to unnecessary risks.
Reception- Class Worship- Story of Joseph
The children enjoyed a very special class worship, as Jack the Puppet helps us explore an important Bible story: the journey of Joseph. Jack tells the dramatic tale of Joseph and his brothers. How jealousy led Joseph's brothers to send him away to Egypt, and how Joseph trusted God and became a powerful and good man. The most wonderful part? We saw how Joseph showed incredible courage and forgiveness when he finally came face-to-face with the very people who had hurt him.
Reception- Science- Colour Mixing
Our little scientists have been diving into the world of colour mixing! Today, Reception children explored the magic of primary colours—red, yellow, and blue. We used the paint on our cauldrons to combine the base colours and see what amazing secondary colours we could create. It was a hands-on, exciting lesson that sparked curiosity and introduced early concepts of scientific investigation and observation. Watch as they discover how just three colours can make so many more!
Reception – Art and Design: Printing
This week in Reception, we’ve been reading Winnie the Witch! The children loved exploring Winnie’s magical world and created their own potions bubbling away in cauldrons. Using finger dabbers, they carefully printed and mixed colours to bring their potions to life. It was a brilliant way to develop fine motor skills while having lots of creative fun.
Reception- Computing- Skeleton Drawing using Purple Mash Programme
The children have used the purple mash programme to create a skeleton on the interactive board. The children selected the colours and tools they needed to make their own skeleton using language that we have been learning throughout the week. The children concentrated on the small features of their skeleton and showed great control with their fine motor movements. Some children created themselves and others created an animal.
